What is DHA?
An omega3 fatty acid, DHA is needed for normal brain
function throughout life. While found throughout tissues of
the body, it is a major structural component of cell membranes
in the gray matter of the brain and retina of the eye. It
is especially important for visual and central nervous system
development during gestation and the first two years after
birth.† The graph below demonstrates the uptake of DHA by
the brain from the third trimester through two years of age.

Why a DHA supplement?
The typical American diet contains low levels of DHA compared
to many other countries due to a low dietary intake
of foods that are rich in this important nutrient. Supplementing
with Expecta LIPIL can help provide the DHA your diet may
lack.*

EPA/FDA Advisory
Fish and shellfish are an important part of a healthy diet,
and fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna, are the most abundant
sources of DHA. However, the Environmental Protection Agency
and the Food and Drug Administration have advised atrisk
groups including pregnant and nursing women to reduce their
exposure to mercury by avoiding certain fish and by limiting
their intake of fish and seafood. To learn more about the recent
FDA advisory of certain fish, click

Breast Milk DHA Levels
DHA levels in breast milk have been strongly associated with
the nursing mother's dietary intake of DHA. Some U.S. studies
have shown breast milk DHA levels similar to the middle range
of worldwide levels; on the other hand, some studies have reported
breast milk DHA levels in some areas of the U.S. to be among
the lowest in the world. (As demonstrated by the graph below)
